Preventing Environmental Damage Essay
The world is recently being beleaguered by environmental issues and problems left and right. Our planet is deteriorating rapidly, and such is due in large part to the activities of man (Cline, 1992). For example, many movements and organizations notice the earthââ¬â¢s problem with respect to pollution, global warming and destruction of ecosystems (Cline, 1992). These are environmental problems that are caused by acts of man. Therefore, the solution and more importantly, the prevention, of these problems also lie in the hands of man. More particularly, the areas where man could take steps towards correcting the damage to the environment call upon leaders to develop programs and policies designed to remedy the problem. Moreover, leaders need to use techniques to implement such programs and policies and deliver results. The participation of leaders in saving the environment is manifested in the acts of countries in taking responsibility in the prevention and saving the environment. As big movers of the world, and wielding great power over its citizens and private companies, countries can accomplish a great deal in preventing further environmental damage. The different approaches in preventing the environment differ in accordance with the respective causes of the damage. Knowing the causes of environmental damage would dictate the proper actions that would prevent such damage from happening. In the case of countriesââ¬â¢ responsibility in this respect, their programs of actions should consist of strict rules and regulations that limit the power of individuals, groups, and communities to exploit the environment. Countriesââ¬â¢ governments are the only institutions that are given the authority and mandate to regulate the use and exploitation of natural resources. Therefore, countries should be active and vigilant in protecting their environment. For example, coral reef ecosystems, which are very important in maintaining the balance of life systems under the sea, are always being destroyed by abuses by man in utilizing resources from it (Center for Sponsored Coastal Ocean Research). Thus, the main cause of destruction of coral reefs is pollution caused by man (Center for Sponsored Coastal Ocean Research). Thus, environmental protection by countries should consist of the enactment of environmental protection measures and the formulation of appropriate environmental policies (Center for Sponsored Coastal Ocean Research). Another illustration can be found in environmental issues surrounding the use of fossil fuels. Such use creates problems because they cause global warming, and fossil fuel is non-renewable; thus, their use depletes vital resources (ââ¬Å"Benefits from Fossil Fuel Useâ⬠). Countries can help prevent such environmental problems by helping the private sector develop technologies that address our dependence on fossil fuel and thereby reduce such dependence and reduce pollution (ââ¬Å"Benefits from Fossil Fuel Useâ⬠). Another example of the participation of countries in preventing environmental damage is through agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency of the United States. The agency has the jurisdiction and authority to regulate the emissions of greenhouse gases by different sources, such as new motor vehicles (Barze Jr. and Casey, 2007). The initiative of countries can also be shown through the adoption of energy saving and better products that do not cause further damage to the environment. One example can be seen in the initiative of leaders of the European Union. They decided that before the end of the decade, all European homes, offices and streets must use energy efficient lighting (EU to switch to energy-efficient bulbs. (International Report), 2007). Amnesty Essay
Ever since we started campaigning in 1961, weââ¬â¢ve worked around the globe to stop the abuse of human rights. Amnesty International ââ¬â Goals and strategy AI aims to maintain every humanââ¬â¢s basic rights as established under the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights. In accordance with this belief, Amnesty works to: â⬠¢Free all Prisoners of Conscience (a ââ¬Å"POCâ⬠is a person imprisoned for the peaceful exercise of their beliefs, which differs somewhat from the typical use of the term political prisoner). â⬠¢Ensure fair and prompt trials. â⬠¢Abolish all forms of torture and ill-treatment of prisoners, including the use of the death penalty. End state-sanctioned terrorism, killings, and disappearances. Amnesty International works to combat individual offences (e. g. one man imprisoned for distributing banned literature in Saudi Arabia) as well as more general policies (e. g. the recently overturned policy of executing juvenile offenders in certain U. S. states). Amnesty works primarily on the local level but its forty-year history of action and its Nobel Peace Prize give it international recognition. Most AI members utilize letter-writing to get their message across. When the central Amnesty International organization finds and validates to its satisfaction instances of human rights abuse, they notify each of more than 7,000 local groups as well as over one million independent members, including 300,000 in the United States alone. Groups and members then respond by writing letters of protest and concern to a government official closely involved in the case, generally without mentioning Amnesty directly. Amnesty International follows a neutrality policy called the ââ¬Å"country ruleâ⬠stating that members should not be active in issues in their own nation, which also protects them from potential mistreatment by their own government. This principle is also applied to researchers and campaigners working for the International Secretariat to prevent domestic political loyalties influencing coverage. Recently, Amnesty has expanded the scope of its work to include economic, social and cultural rights, saying that these concerns had arisen out of its traditional work on political and civil rights. Its 2004 annual report said that ââ¬Å"it is difficult to achieve sustainable progress towards implementation of any one human right in isolation. â⬠¦ AI will strive to â⬠¦ assert a holistic view of rights protection. It will be particularly important to do so in relation to extreme poverty, and the human rights issues underlying poverty. ââ¬Å"[2] As an example it asserts that ââ¬Å"The right to effective political participation depends on a free media, but also on an educated and literate population. ââ¬Å"[3]

Americaââ¬â¢s Broken Social Contract Essay examples - 1812 Words
From traditional society to modern society, America has managed to end up with a part employer-based and part government-based system. What does this mean? It simply means that American employers provide healthcare and pension plans to most workers, and the government provides Social Security, which is public pension, and Medicaid and Medicare, which is health care for the poor and elderly (Haltstead and Lind 66). This might seem like a good idea, but in fact it has lead to many problems that must be resolved quickly. Americaââ¬â¢s Broken Social Contract The current United States social contract has created many problems for the American citizens. It is possible to see many of the problems when examining theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, ââ¬Å"even though the numbers of opportunities for disease prevention using genetic testing will increase with time, the risks of testing, which include insurance loss and employment discrimination, currently make testing problematicâ⬠(Steinberg 2007). This employer- based system has created disastrous situations for the citizens of the United States. The second part of the current American social contract is the government-based system. This part of the system consists of the government ââ¬Å"assuming responsibility for public pension,â⬠which is called Social Security (Halstead and Lind 66). This Social Security system is also a historical accident. In Franklin D. Rooseveltââ¬â¢s New Deal, he proposed a public pension system was fully funded before retirees received payouts. Instead of following FDRââ¬â¢s original idea, the Social Security system was altered into a ââ¬Å"pay as you goâ⬠system. This changing of the original system called for younger citizens to be taxed to pay the retirement income of elders (Halstead and Lind 79). Now in the twenty first century there is a serious problem, due to a greater number of elderly than younger people. Social Security is currently under a huge financial burden. If this system is not fixed or reconstructed, there will be even bigger problems for the future, such as no retirement fund. There will still be money going into the system, but definitelyShow MoreRelatedCriminal Justice System And The Crime System Essay1704 Words à |à 7 PagesCriminal Justice System can be looked at as a contract within itself that contains two parts of its social contract, part one as crimes with the punishments to those crimes and part two as the due process to how the legal system handles the suspect of a crime. River Flows in You Musical Analysis Essay Example For Students
River Flows in You Musical Analysis Essay You a piano piece composed and performed by Hiram (Lee-Our-Ma), a New Age artist. It is part of his second album First Love which was marketed in 2001. In accordance to this, River Flows is popular for weddings and was also used the pop film Twilight. Piano, the instrument Hiram first played, is the only instrument used to play the piece. As heard in the recording, River Flows in You, begins with an andante tempo. The tempo gradually heightens up as the song progresses. It gives contrast to he piece that is still light and soft to the ears of listeners. Despite of the varieties in tempo the piece still concludes with andante. The way Hiram ended his piece gives a sense of satisfaction and content to the listener for it made the song sound complete and natural. Every phrase is played in a crescendo- decrescendo way. River Flows in You given variety in tempo and dynamic brings about the theme of the music: romance. The introduction sounds pure and soft, simple yet captivating. Its theme can already be felt and emphasized at the beginning. Its base becomes the heart of the song; every other note revolving around it. The pieces key is in the A Major with a 5/4 time signature. River Flows features finger positions indicated in numbers. In the musical score, the piece uses fermata and grace notes. The positioning of the fermata notes bring about the needed rest or breathing since the piece generally sounds fast-paced. On the other hand, grace notes add interesting resonance in River Flows in You. Aside from these, the musical score also indicated the finger positioning of the instrumentalist. Its rhythm and base of the song is played by the left hand, seen in the F-cleft, is consistent all throughout. The rhythm though is not easy to identify if one does not listen closely to it. This is due to the fact that the piece has a lot of overlapping sounds and notes. When listened to as a whole, River Flows in You genuinely sounds as if it is a river flowing. The variety n speed gives the listener a sense of being within the currents of the water.

The Importance Of A College Ed Essay Example For Students
The Importance Of A College Ed Essay The Importance of a College Education You make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give (Winston Churchill, circa 1940) Learning the importance of getting a good college education did not come to me until I was 31 years old. Many of my friends, and colleagues and I were of the same age, however they were far beyond me in educational levels. It was for this reason, and other reasons, including better society levels, and the ability to achieve my career goals, that I decided to go back to college. With rare exceptions, all Americans will need to participate in some sort of postsecondary, occupational skill-development program if they are to be productive enough in the new knowledge-based economy to earn for themselves and their families a decent standard of living. And understanding this led me to my decision to return to school. We will write a custom essay on The Importance Of A College Ed specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Upon graduation from high school in 1987, and I immediately began working. My first job was was with the United States Navy where I stayed for almost 7 years. I attended Central Texas College as well during this time. Unfortunately, my heart and mind were not in my studies. I was more or less going to please others and because I thought it was the right thing to do. After three years of playing around and getting mediocre grades I decided to just concentrate on the Navy and my new family. Work within the Navy was fine. It taught me how to use the most important computer applications and learn great interpersonal and business relation skills. It was because of this 40 hour a week schedule that I completely cut off school for 5 years. I did not realize the impact this would have on my future. My mind told me I did not need a degree as long as I had a full time job with a good salary. But I soon realized that this blue collar work was not something I wanted to remain in for the rest of my life. While many of my peers were progressing, getting promotions and higher salaries, I remained the ever so needed administrative assistant in the Navy and now in the civilian world, preparing for my release from the Navy. I have to admit, I am great at what I do, or so I have been told on many occasions. However, the majority of what I do is not challenging enough to hold my interest for a long period of time. I have an intelligent mind and I intend to put it to full use. I want the doors of opportunity to come my way, and getting a proper college education will be the key. I have an even a greater chance to succeed because I will have work experience behind me as well my degree. Still and all, if I could do it again, I would have immediately attended college right after my high school graduation. If I had taken the correct course I would have already graduated and would probably be in a higher paying position. I was warned time and time again to go to school, because work would always be there. A hard head makes a soft behind. Personal growth through college education is an amazing thing, that is another reason I decided to go back is because I saw my beautiful 65 year-old mother walk the stage and proudly receive her Bachelors Degree in Nursing in the summer of 1998. She raised her children, and retired from 20 years of service at North Austin Medical Center as a Licensed Vocational Nurse and still decided to go back and get a degree. My mother has my utmost respect for her dedication for higher education. Even after all these years she couldve just relaxed and enjoyed the fruits of her labor, instead she chose to attend college again. After weighing all of my options and seeing all the signs I knew it was time to get back in the game.
